Countless pets/animals are also being affected by this crisis.  I can’t bear the thought of my sweet kitties being victims to such a tragedy.  I’ve written a blog on where to help our fellow humans, but I decided to also put together in one place – Hurricane Harvey ~ Help for Pets Options.  They also need our help!  Many are lost, confused, injured, and hungry.  There are beautiful places and people eager to help with rescues, shelter, and care.  They need our help!  We can Volunteer, Adopt, Foster, Donate money or badly needed Pet food and Supplies, Evacuations.  It is important to do it with an organization.  Could be dangerous for you! Below are various ways and places we can do that.  Each place varies in their ability and need.

I didn’t know I truly appreciated BLACK CATS until we rescued my three black kitties’ feral mother seventeen years ago.  She gave birth shortly after, then was sadly killed by coyotes in the hills near our home when they were only two weeks old.  We took over as kitty mom and have been head-over-KITTY-heals in love ever since!

Nothing like kitty head bumps and kitty nose kisses.  But, ohhhhh dear . . . Kitty’s nose isn’t moist or cold!  Is my sweet kitty sick? What to do Meow?

The Nose Dodge

Baby Girl, one of my three black siblings has never been a big fan of nose kisses.  This could be the result.    Hee.  Actually, I’ve rarely seen this sweet girl look annoyed.  However . . .

If I zero in for an Eskimo nuzzle, she often dodges me.  But I sometimes just can’t resist.   Maybe I should throw in a Tuna flavored breath mint first!

Baby Girl is very loving.  She initiates lovey-dovey kitty sessions all the time – but she likes to be the initiator.

Warm Nose

One evening when sneaking in a nose kiss, I was taken aback. Her cute little nose was warm and dry as sandpaper (fine grit). To be honest, I panicked. That’s a bad sign isn’t it? What’s wrong? I felt Squeeker’s. Yep. Nice, moist and cold. Good for him, but not for her!

So WHAT MEOW? I got online, of course!

I read lots of stuff that mostly reassured me.   I decided to put what I found to be most helpful here, so it’s all in one place.

• Dr. Debra of www.Petplace.com comments on Does a cold wet nose mean your cat is healthy? “The answer is NO!”, she says. “A cold wet nose does not determine health. A cat with a good appetite maintaining a good body weight and is playful is a sign of good health.”

• VetWest on their web Pet Library www.vetwest.com.au  claims, “A cold, wet nose is just one sign of wellness in cats and dogs and should not be considered in isolation as an indication of overall health. On occasion you will find a healthy pet with a warm dry nose. Perhaps they don’t lick their nose as often, or secrete as much mucous. On the other hand a sick pet can have a cold, wet nose.”
• Hill’s Pet Care Center  www.hillspet.com/   says on their web page:

“Cat parents frequently ask if a dry, warm nose means their cat is sick. The short answer is no. A healthy cat’s nose can vary between wet and dry several times over the course of a day. And there are many reasons your cat can have a dry, warm nose that have nothing to do with health. Here are a few:

Lying in the sun
Spending time near a source of heat
Dwelling in a room with poor air circulation
Licking — saliva quickly dries on skin”

“Looking at a cat’s nose is a good way to check for some other problems. If your cat’s nasal skin is flaking, a dermatological problem may be to blame. Ask your veterinarian to check it out.
When examining your cat’s nose, another thing to look for is nasal discharge. If your cat’s nose runs, the mucus should be clear. If your cat is producing bubbly, thick, yellow, green or even black mucus, see your veterinarian.”

Nice & Moist!

By the time I had finished doing my research, I felt her nose again (after multiple times during).

Her nose was back to velvety soft, cold and moist. Whew! My darling girl was just fine.

Good to have a little nose-knowledge under my kitty-belt fur next time!
Naturally, every situation is different and you should use your discretion and consult your vet if in any doubt.

I’m a huge bunny fan.  I’ve had several.  My family now has two!  *see below    We are all also HUGE KITTY fans. So a Bunny-Kitty is just about hoppily puuuurfect! Hee.

SAFETY FOR YOUR PETS DURING THE HOLIDAY ~ DANGERS LURK!

Enjoy your day with your bi-peds!  But be weady, I mean, ready, and tell your humans to be truly prepared.  Don’t eat their candy!  That stuffs is not good for your adorable little huggable, furry bodies!  Sugar and especially CHOCOLATES are actually dangerous for you!

GOODIES NOT SO GOOD FOR YOUR PETS

Easter chocolate candy will make kids smile and will look delicious to your pets, but they won’t be smiling if they eat it, nor will you!

Even the beautiful EASTER LILY, symbol of the Renewal of Life, also has a dark side for pets.

So please, Pet parents, be extra aware during this Season.

PET POISON HOTLINE is a good source for knowing the dangers for food, candy and and anything else you may have a question about.  Keep this link handy.

According to the Pet Poison Hotline, “Unbeknownst to many pet owners, Easter lilies are highly toxic to cats,” said Ahna Brutlag, DVM, MS assistant director at Pet Poison Helpline. “All parts of the Easter lily plant are poisonous – the petals, the leaves, the stem and even the pollen. Cats that ingest as few as one or two leaves, or even a small amount of pollen while grooming their fur, can suffer severe kidney failure.”

DOGGIE SNEAKY EATING WOES

Critters can get into trouble eating the wrong things.  they just don’t know any better.  It is up to us to protect them. My family’s new DOGGIE, Sven, got into BIG trouble when he ate something he shouldn’t have!  A scary and expensive adventure.  He’s fine now.  He just turned one year old!

Our new doggie Sven has had a tough time , but in his new furever home, he is enjoying life and chillin’ in his chariot! 

Sven. just weeks ago. When my kids gave him a new home he soon had a variety of problems.

He’s doing much better now, but still working with some issues.  More on that to come.

Our new little guy!  He needed a new furever home.  That’s where my kids always seem to come in! He’s quite rambunctious and has been having a great time with the fam and the girls are crazy about him.

The Cat Done Did It?

But within days, Sven started having problems.  He was quieter, not eating as well and soon began throwing up with diarrhea, then culminating in his eating grass.  They were concerned  it might be some kind of intestinal blockage.  Possibly kitty litter was all they could think of.   A trip to the ER with his worried new parents ended up with Sven in surgery.

Diagnosis – Bingo!

Well, many $$$$ later….  Yep!  Cat litter was the culprit for his bowel obstruction.  Technically, the cat contributed, but was just doing what comes natural!  hee. Plus,  he had several Polyps removed and Roundworm!  I thought that strange as the kids had paperwork showing the previous owner’s Vet had taken care of that.   Read more about Roundworm in DOGS on PetWebMD.

Naughty Little Worms Cleanup

Well, a lot of cleanup in the house in necessary with that diagnosis, to protect the humans in his life, as it can be contagious.   I suggested Cleaning White Distilled Vinegar.   2 parts vinegar to 1 part water.  Great cleaner and safe for family and pets.

Contagious to Humanoids?

This is a good article regarding Roundworm and humans. 

I was concerned the family was exposed when they weren’t aware.  There are a lot of great natural solutions to help protect us people folk from Roundworm to protection and/or prevention .     I’ll  blog about that soon!

Perky Puppy

Sven is doing well one and a half weeks later.  Not totally there, but coming along nicely.  Kitty litter safely tucked away where he can’t litter-gobble.

Usually his ears softly fold, but since getting his med no-itch collar, he keeps them perked at attention!

Sweet Frankie has had a rough time of it.  She was happily living with a loving human/chicken family and thought it was her forever home.  She and her sisters loved to be cuddled by their boy.

Poor Chickie

But one day her owners endured a terrible incident.  Ruthless unknown entities broke into their yard and did vicious harm to poor Frankie.     Her lovely comb needed to be sewn back in place via a hefty vet bill.

Frankie was a little trooper!  She was mending well, but there was a new problem.  By nature, chickens will be inclined to go into pecking the ‘weak’ injured chicken mode.  Oh!  Double-Poor Frankie!  Her owners tried everything.  They even got little chicken masks for her sisters to see if that would help.   It makes so they’re not able to see what’s right in front of them. They can still see to the side, so they can eat and drink and move around just fine, but they don’t go after other chickens.  (Well, that’s what’s supposed to happen . . .)

Featherever Home

Frankie needed a new  forever home. And that is what she got.

Frankie in her new chickie house and her proud new owner making a chicken face in Frankie’s honor! (Frankie keeps in touch with her boy.)
